(7 Nov 2016) Indonesian police summoned Jakarta's popular governor to its headquarters for questioning on Monday following allegations of blasphemy.
Basuki Tjahaja Purnama was questioned by police investigators for eight hours for alleged blasphemy after he quoted a passage in the Quran, during a speech last September, that could be interpreted as prohibiting Muslims from accepting non-Muslims as leaders.
The video in which Basuki quoted the verse went viral and has angered some Indonesian Muslims.
Basuki, an ethnic Chinese and minority Christian, popularly known as "Ahok," is seeking a second term as Jakarta's governor.
He is popular with the city's middle class and is adored as a blunt speaker who doesn't tolerate corruption.
