To understand the context of the situation, we have to go all the way back to the beginning of the year 2008, when Kosovo officially declared its independence from Serbia. The reasons for this separation had to do with the fact that Kosovar people are extremely different from Serbians

For starters, 93% people living in kosovo are actually Albanian, and only 1.5% are serbian. on top of that, more than 95 percent of the country is muslim, whereas serbia is majority eastern orthodox

But back to the question of why is it so controversial. Well, this is because Serbia continues to claim that Kosovo is just a rebellious territory of serbia, and isn't an independent country at all.

Currently, only a total of 117 countries recognize Kosovo as independent, with notable countries like Serbia, Bosnia, and Russia denying Kosovo’s claim as an independent country.
