It has been a life-long ambition to make a high quality duet cover of this song, and thanks to the exceptional talents of 13-year-old Carlo Cifuentes this dream finally came true.
I love this song. I love the way the conversation between a benevolent authority figure and a restricted dependent is timeless and universal.
I feel that it speaks for so many of the children I work with who struggle to communicate due to their neurodiverse minds. It’s a conversation between a Father and a Son but I hear it as a conversation between a child and those in their lives with power and influence.
The voice of power is gentle and caring but still can’t understand the helplessness and frustration of the child:
“All the times that I’ve cried
Keeping all the things I knew inside
It’s hard, but it’s harder to ignore it
If they were right I’d agree
But it’s them they know, not me”
Yet I find it to be a very encouraging song to sing simply because it is a conversation between old and young. As long as there is communication, there is a great deal of hope.
