Want to try out free-motion quilting? Everything you need to get started is in this quick video!
Getting started with machine quilting is as easy as 123. First you need the correct foot. There are several different names for it; darning foot, free-motion quilting foot or even a hopping foot.
There are many different styles, it can be circular or oval, open or closed. So if you aren’t sure, check with your manufacturer to find what they suggest.
Once you've got your foot, lower the feed dogs of the machine. Their main purpose is to move fabric forward when sewing. But for machine quilting, we want to control the direction of the fabric, so go ahead an lower them and get them out of the way!
Next, Prepare a quilt sandwich with the top, batting and backing fabric.
When you try this for the first time, you might want to use a smaller quilt sandwich or project. We have to have something to practice on, right? Once you've done this, you're ready to free-motion quilt!
Place the quilt sandwich under the foot, and take a single stitch to pull the bobbin thread up to the top. This will prevent any loops or knots from forming on the bottom.
Holding onto the two threads, lower the foot and take a few more stitches in place to secure the thread.
Now you're ready for my favorite part, the quilting! Lower the needle and raise it again to pull up the bobbin thread.
Press the foot peddle and begin moving the quilt sandwich at the same time. Try to move the quilt at a consistent speed. Don't worry if it doesn't come naturally at first, it gets easier with practice.
Try quilting a loopy line, a meandering design or your name.
Free-motion is something that takes a little practice, so keep practicing until you feel comfortable moving the quilt sandwich at a consistent pace.
So now that you know how to get started, go ahead and get machine quilting. Soon you'll love it as much as I do.
