Last time on the Trainer, we went over the first five modes of Global OBD II. We learned that there are a total of ten modes available to any technician that owns even the most inexpensive Global OBD II-capable tool. Each of these modes provides a resource that can help us troubleshoot and repair the Diagnostic Trouble Codes related to emissions – that is, most of the powertrain codes.
We also learned that the first five modes are, for the most part, ones you are used to using every day. Mode $03 for learning why the Check Engine light is illuminated, Mode $02 to see the stored Freeze Frame data related to the DTC that caused the light to come on, Mode $01 to view relative current data and finally, Mode $04 to turn the light off and clear the code(s) when we’re all done with our repair.
We’ll take a look at Modes $06 through $0A (that’s Mode 10 in computer talk), providing you an overview of what each mode does and it’s use as a diagnostic aid. You’ll learn about TIDs, CIDs and MIDs, how to make sure your customer didn’t install a used ECM without telling you, and show you that some DTCs can’t be erased no matter how hard you try.
All this, and a bit more, in the March edition of “The Trainer”.
