I travelled to Búðardalur and visited Rebecca in her petting farm called Hólar. Rebecca rescues injured animals, many of which are known to be wild, such as arctic foxes, and she also breeds certain birds including Icelandic chickens. When we visited her farm, she was kind enough to take us to “Krummi,” her beautiful raven and told us her story. As we walked inside the farm, the raven started calling Rebecca “Mamma” and also said her own name which was Krummi. As Rebecca told us all about Krummi’s story and how she had become a part of their family at Hólar farm, I could observe Krummi listening to us attentively with her piercing black eyes. I had never witnessed such intimate relationship between a raven and a human as their bond was so magical. Rebecca mentioned that having her three children always calling her “Mamma” around the raven also led to Krummi learning this word and calling her mamma as well. Unfortunately, since Krummi’s wing had been injured as she was only a newborn bird, she is permanently unable to fly. Nonetheless, she seemed very happy and spoiled with other animals that were present in the farm. Rebecca also told us that Krummi figured out how to hide her food when she realized other birds sometimes eat them.
