Welcome to our MLK Tour of DC! Where did Martin Luther King Jr. go before, during, and after giving his "I Have a Dream Speech" during the March on Washington in 1963? We'll show you!
Most people know that Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington in 1963. But, in this travel vlog of DC, we wanted to visit the other places in DC that Dr. King visited when he was here for the historic March on Washington. These locations are great places to visit in Washington, DC to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day or just to have a unique experience during your next trip to our nation's capital. There’s so much history to explore in The District!
First is a restaurant that is a DC landmark and a favorite spot among locals and celebrities. Ben's Chili Bowl has been the home of Washington DC's original half-smoke for over 60 years. Its owners, Ben and Virginia Ali, met Dr. King when he'd stop by their restaurant occasionally, while working at his satellite office in DC. We got to meet Virginia Ali and ask her about the times she met MLK and what it was like to be among the crowds on the National Mall at the March on Washington in 1963! It was incredible to hear her perspective on such a huge event in America’s history.
Next, we went to where Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his "I Have a Dream" speech. The Willard InterContinental is a famous hotel in DC on Pennsylvania Avenue, just a short walk from The White House. It was in the lobby of this hotel that Dr. King consulted with his advisors on his speech. He later finished writing the speech in his hotel room, into the early morning.
We had to visit the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall, where 250,000 people once stood, listening to Dr. Martin Luther King give his speech. There's an inscription on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that show where exactly MLK stood when he gave his speech on August 28, 1963. We also visited the exhibit, below the Lincoln Memorial, that has pictures from the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
After giving his historic speech, Rev. Martin Luther King went to the White House to speak with President John F. Kennedy and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson about their march leaders' list of demands. King returned to the White House one year later to witness President Johnson sign the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law.
There is a time capsule in DC, underneath The Freedom Plaza, that was buried in 1988. It contains some of Dr. King's belongings and is supposed to be re-opened in 2088.
We sometimes take living so close to Washington, DC for granted, so we are glad we revisited these national landmarks through the lens of Dr. King to reflect on Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy.
