We’ve all been deeply influenced by hip hop music and its culture—its beats, rap flows, instruments, and samples. While we often believe hip hop is shaping modern Indian music, how many of us know that some of the greatest hip hop tracks by the world’s finest artists have been inspired by Indian classics? From the ragas of the north to the folk tunes of the south, and from cinematic masterpieces to traditional rhythms, India’s music is a treasure trove of sounds, rich with heritage and emotion. These melodies have not only defined our culture but have also inspired artists globally, sampled and celebrated across international borders. This piece, “Did You Know?”, choreographed by Pradeep and performed by the ARDS Hip Hop Batch, is a tribute to India’s evergreen golden songs and their undeniable influence on global hip hop. We’re excited to see if you recognize these iconic tracks and how they’ve been sampled by foreign artists.
