The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"There was a man among those before you who had killed 99 people. Then he asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth and was directed to a devout worshiper (‘abid). He went to the worshiper and told him that he had killed 99 people and asked if there was any chance for him to repent. The worshiper said, 'No,' so the man killed him, completing 100 murders. Then he asked about the most knowledgeable person and was directed to a scholar (‘alim). He told the scholar about his crimes and asked if there was any chance for repentance. The scholar said, 'Yes, who can stand between you and repentance? Go to such-and-such a land; there are people devoted to worshiping Allah. Join them in worship and do not return to your land because it is an evil place.' So, he set out for that land, but midway through the journey, death overtook him."
