Cato Institute’s Sahar Khan says there might be a “clash” between the Taliban and ISIS-K following the attack at Kabul airport.
It comes after ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the two deadly explosions which took place at Hamid Karzai international airport overnight.
“This is very indicative of what’s going on, on the ground in Afghanistan in general,” Ms Khan told Sky News Australia.
“I mean for the most part in western media and western governments have always treated the Taliban as sort of the main violent militant group operating in the country but that’s simply not true.
“I think what we’re going to see is large clashes and we should expect more attacks like this, especially because ISIS-K is kind of known for doing these kinds of brutal attacks and targeting civilians in particular.
“They view the Taliban as a group that has catered to the west and that does not share their ideology of jihad.”
Ms Khan said the attack is a “sign” of the civil war Afghanistan is experiencing after the Taliban took over Kabul.
