The Ryukyu Kingdom (1429–1879) was a monarchy situated in the Ryukyu Archipelago. Initially a vassal state of the Ming Dynasty in China, it was ruled by Ryukyuan monarchs who unified Okinawa Island, bringing an end to the Three Mountains period. However, after the invasion by the Satsuma domain of Japan in 1609, the Ryukyu Kingdom became a vassal state under Satsuma's control, maintaining a semblance of legal independence until it was officially transformed into the Ryukyu Domain of the Japanese Empire in 1872. Eventually, in 1879, the Ryukyu Kingdom was formally annexed and dissolved by Japan, leading to the establishment of Okinawa Prefecture, with the Ryukyuan monarchy assimilated into the new Japanese aristocracy.
Today,In the international community, including China, the major countries of the world recognize the fact that the Ryukyu Kingdom belongs to Japan, and no one intends to change this reality. Additionally, the official website of the Chinese Consulate General in Fukuoka, Japan, explicitly designates the Ryukyu Kingdom as part of Japanese territory.
