The last time I went to a Duxford flying day was circa 2012 with a fishing mate per my early YouTube videos 010 to 013. This time a model railway mate suggested he wanted to go, so as I’m an IWM member, tickets were booked. As it happened, said mate was not well on the day, so his lodger mate got his ticket.
It was a hot day & we were sheltering in the shadow of the large USAF Museum frontage. The Hawker Fury display was announced & as I knew it was regarded as one of the fastest piston engine fighters ever designed, I thought I just had to film it. I only had my Sony Smartphone which takes superb videos, but obviously doesn’t have the zoom that’s really needed for this type of filming. However, what I ended up with is very acceptable, especially as I couldn’t see the plane a lot of the time because of reflections on the screen.
The sound of the original Bristol Centaurus XVIII radial engine though is magnificent, enhanced by the sound reflecting properties of the USAF Museum glass windows.
I am seriously considering buying a proper semi-professional video camera for such occasions in the future !
