Although we enhance the mitzvah by having each person light their own menorah, the minimum requirement is for the head of the household to light one menorah for the whole family. During the time of Chanukah, the Greeks tried to force their culture on the Jewish people, and the Jews resisted the outside influences by strengthening the influence of the household. This is the message of the menorah for all generations - to create an authentic Jewish home to combat the forces of evil from the outside.
