Later this month, Seoul and Washington will hold the "Ulchi Freedom Shield" the first full-fledged joint military drills in four years.
The allies will kick off their preliminary drills Tuesday with a focus on response measures to possible pre-war crisis scenarios.

South Korea and the United States are set to kick off their four-day crisis management drills on Tuesday.
The preliminary military drills come ahead of the allies' major combined exercise,... "Ulchi Freedom Shield" later this month.
Led by South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the preliminary drills aim to practice how to respond to possible pre-war crisis scenarios caused by North Korean provocations.
The allies will practice how to integrate intelligence, diplomatic, military and economic measures to resolve these crises.
Once the preliminary drills are completed, the two allies will hold their "Ulchi Freedom Shield" exercise slated for August 22nd to September 1st.
It'll be the first full-fledged joint military exercises in four years... since the Ulchi Freedom Guardian drills were put on hold in 2018 as part of efforts to foster inter-Korean relations.
The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise includes the South Korean government's Ulchi civil contingency training and seeks to enhance the allies' overall capabilities to deal with a possible "all-out" war on the Korean Peninsula.
"There will be a total of 11 different types of outdoor maneuvers during the upcoming South Korea-U.S. joint exercise set for mid-August."
The training will use various real-life scenarios, including a fire at a semiconductor factory and a paralysis of the banking network.
Another key part of the upcoming training... is the full operational capability or FOC assessment... a key procedure for the envisioned transfer of wartime operational control from Washington to Seoul.
