ENO Music Director Edward Gardner on ENO's special connection with The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, and why it's important we perform the piece in English as Wagner intended.
The Mastersingers of Nuremberg:
Wagner's comic opera tells the story of a 16th-century guild of amateur poets and musicians (the Mastersingers), in which the tension between creativity and conformity is played out in a society obsessed with rules and regulations.
Full of glorious melodies, stirring choruses and thrilling orchestration, it reveals the composer at the height of his powers.
Director Richard Jones (Rodelinda, The Girl of the Golden West) brings this spectacular staging to London for the first time.
ENO Music Director Edward Gardner conducts an exceptional cast that includes leading Wagnerian bass-baritone Iain Paterson as Hans Sachs and a magnificent chorus of 90 singers.
