Space astronauts: release the world's first satellite made with a 3D printer.
Russians Fyodor Yurchikhin and Sergey Ryazanskiy ventured out of the International Space Station and fired five nano-satellites by hand. The first case that was released was completely made with a 3D printer. Researchers want to see how 3D-made pieces weather the space environment. The others have traditional spaceship pieces.
Each weighs 10 pounds to 24 pounds and is 1 to 2 feet. It is expected to orbit for six months. It commemorates the 60th anniversary of the world's first satellite, Sputnik 1, launched on October 4, 1957. Another pays tribute to Russian rocketry father Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. He was born 160 years ago next month.
