From Bucaramanga, I took a bus (bound for Bogota) to San Gil. Its elevation - 1900m - is double that of Bucaramanga but felt just as hot. San Gil has a reputation of being Colombia's "adventure capital", but they were mainly "adventures" I was not so interested in.
I was more into hiking so, the next day, took a bus to Barichara to walk the Camino Real to Guane, on an ancient trail (pre-colonial) that took an hour and 20 mins (mainly because it was downhill in that direction).
All 3 towns - San Gil, Barichara, Guane - are great for walking around, with nice cobblestoned streets, shops and restaurants, and old churches among other attractions. Some of San Gil's streets must rank among the steepest in the world.
