To extract a sample of tissue from a mass or lump, a core biopsy involves inserting a needle through the skin. This sample is examined under a microscope for any abnormalities. Pre-procedure, please inform your doctor if you are on blood thinners and make sure you are not on an empty stomach. You are settled comfortably in a private area throughout the procedure. The site of the biopsy is exposed, and the rest of your body is covered with a blanket. The doctor may administer local anesthesia. The procedure is performed using an automated gun. The procedure takes about 20 minutes, and you may experience slight discomfort. Post-procedure, the site is disinfected, and a band-aid is applied. Reports are available within four days and can be collected from the Oncology Department.
