Vocal cord polyp can happen to anybody. You have a sudden strain of voice when you have a cold and you are coughing, throat irritation and you are frequently clearing your throat, and you suddenly scream, at that time anybody can develop a vocal cord polyp. We have seen it more common in teachers or shop keepers i.e. people who are have to use their voice more frequently or to a longer extent. We call it voice abuse. In those people the vocal cord polyp can be more frequently seen although most of them suffer from another condition called as vocal cord nodules. In any case risk factors are usually people who over use their voice, or who don’t take adequate voice rest when they have a respiratory infection or the infections which are affecting the vocal cords. In any case it is better you make sure that you use your voice judiciously so that you don’t end up with a vocal cord problem.
