All you need is an Angle Grinder with a 1/4 thick Metal Cut-off wheel. Grind around the seam and hammer the lid to separate the seam. Make sure the insides of the barrel have been cleaned from any residue before attempting this.

This works because the lid and the sides are folded over each other to create an air tight seal. Grinding the seam separates the lid from the rest of the barrel.
You can now use your new drum as a fire barrel just drill holes to allow air flow. You can also use it for storage container, or a compost bin. There are hundreds of uses for these barrels.
