Ever hear of the Neutral Safety Switch on a Mercedes? It stops you starting the car in any gear except neutral or park. It also controls your reverse lights and can be responsible for them not working. I swap mine for a new one and we have a look underneath the car to see how to access it and then discuss what to do to change it. My car is a 1987 300e W124 but this applies to most of the cars of the time especially if you have the 722 gearbox. Learn how to fix the Mercedes neutral safety switch including if your Mercedes reverse lights don't work.
