Johann Strauss Jr was not the only Waltz King. There were many others, who composed mainly waltzes and other dance music, or were famous because of their waltz compositions. This series features the other waltz kings.
Émile Waldteufel (9 December 1837 – 12 February 1915) was a French pianist, conductor and composer of dance music. He was jewish with a German name, although he was born in Strasbourg, which made him French.
He was known as the French Waltz King. As he was a pianist, he first wrote his waltzes for the piano before orchestrating them. The style of his waltzes differs from his contemporary Johann Strauss Jr, in being more subtle, less exuberant and more romantic. And many of the waltzes have a touch of Spanish influence in them.
Les Patineurs or The Skater's Waltz is Waldteufel's most famous waltz. The waltz was inspired by the Cercle des Patineurs or 'Rink of Skaters' at the Bois de Boulogne in Paris.
Les Patineurs comprises an introduction, 4 waltzes and a finale (coda). The medley opens with an introduction depicting a wintry scene with skaters poised and ready. The first waltz theme is featured in the introduction and well as the grand finale. Throughout, this is a swirling waltz with some of Waldteufel's most romantic and memorable tunes, depicting skaters around the skating rink.
