A. Gitesh Sarma was appointed India’s High Commissioner to Australia in October 2019, at a time when the bilateral ties between both countries were undergoing a strategic transformation, with the Chinese factor playing in the background. It was during Sarma’s tenure that India-Australia ties got upgraded to a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ and both countries enhanced their security and defence cooperation — Australia also witnessed a comeback to the Malabar Naval Exercise. Sarma also served as Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs. Now retired, Sarma will soon be taking over as the Special Officer (International Cooperation) for the Andhra Pradesh government. In an exclusive interview to ThePrint, he explained how the relationship between New Delhi and Canberra underwent a paradigm shift.
