I visit probably the most-isolated place on Route 66 - Amboy, California. A town that had over a hundred people now has 5 residents. Albert Okura of the Juan Pollo chicken chain of Southern California is the current owner of the properties in this town. It has been a non-stop project to restore its nostalgic glory. Roy's Motel and Cafe, which re-opened in 2008 as a souvenir shop and gas station, is a popular photo stop.

Please keep in mind that there is no access of the old Mother Road east of Roy's. A large section of the old highway was closed in 2019 by the California highway department due to needs of many repairs on the road and bridges. The best way to get here when traveling Route 66 westbound is taking Interstate 40 to exit 78. Go south on Kelbaker Road, which is about 20 miles to old 66. Then take a right once you get there, and you can't miss it. It is a great drive when you're in the Mojave Desert.
