Turkey's foreign minister Hakan Fidan attended an informal meeting of European Union FMs. This is the first time in 5 years that he attended an EU meet. Turkey has been trying to become an EU member for decades. It became a candidate in 1999, and negotiations began moving forward in 2005. But the talks were paused in 2016. That's the year that Turkey saw a failed coup attempt. Turkey's President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, used the coup as an excuse to purge his political opposition. The purge caused the EU to first pause, and then suspend accession talks. Has Erdogan finally decided to reverse his stance and seek rapprochement with the EU?
