Tolentino wants government officials to declare if relatives are in "terrorist groups"
Sen. Francis Tolentino is proposing government officials to declare in their Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth if they have relatives up to the fourth degree of consanguinity who are connected or affiliates of "terrorist groups."
The lawmaker says he is concerned of the possible breach in the access of confidential and sensitive information, emphasizing the "semblance of a strong government."
He made the proposal after Adora Faye De Vera, the sister of Commission on Higher Education Chairperson Prospero De Vera, was arrested due to rebellion charges as an alleged officer of the Communist Party of the Philippines. She is also a Martial Law abuse survivor.
Popoy De Vera has distanced himself from the issue, saying he has neither seen nor spoken to her for more than 25 years and does not share her views.
Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel notes they would have to amend the law on SALNs.
