Another hike in the high country of the Austria's East Tirol (Osttirol). Here, the Kals Valley slices into the crystalline mountains of the Austrian "high Alps" in a north-south direction. From this valley, the Grossglockner, Austria's tallest mountain, best displays its bell-shaped silhouette. The name of the peak derives from the German "gross" (big) and "glocke" (bell). A large portion of the mountains surrounding the Grossglockner are protected in the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest national park in the Alps. Covering about 716 square miles, the Hohe Tauern National Park is almost twice as large as Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park.
