Myra (Kim Stanley) and Billy Savage (Richard Attenborough) are a married couple living in London. Myra works as a medium, who holds weekly meetings, séances, for a regular group of customers, while Billy supports her in these ventures, as he does not otherwise work, due to his asthma. Myra, with Billy's support, devises a scheme to raise her public prominence as a medium: kidnap Amanda Clayton (Judith Donner), the young daughter of a wealthy couple, and using her psychic powers provide information to the Claytons and the police of Amanda and the requested ransom money's whereabouts.
Whatever alchemy sometimes happens between director, composer, and subject matter, happened repeatedly with Bryan Forbes and John Barry. Barry's music always added a dramatic effect. There is a nice contrast between the joyous rytmic section and the synister strings. He lets the flutes rise up with airy and and subtle clouds of dissonant chords. His score is not only one of his best, but a perfect marriage of film and music.
