Paramaribo (nickname Par′bo ) is the capital and largest city of Suriname . With a population of around 250,000 inhabitants, the city is located on the banks of the Suriname River , 5°52' North and 55°10' West, approximately 15 km from the Atlantic Ocean . Bauxite , sugar cane , rice , cocoa , coffee , rum , and tropical hardwoods are exported from Paramaribo. The city also manufactures cement , paint and beer .
Its area was taken over by Great Britain in 1630 , and in 1650 , the city became the capital of the newest British colony. The territory was then disputed between the British and the Dutch , remaining under Dutch rule from 1815 until Suriname's independence in 1975 . Its citizens are mainly made up of Indians , Indians , Javanese , Africans and Dutch descent.
Paramaribo has a museum , a cathedral , forts and canals left over from Dutch times. The historic center of the city has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. [ 1 ]
