Jersey City and Hoboken have begun offering testing for COVID-19 antibodies to all residents, a step that city and health officials hope will help them understand how widespread the virus is and help contain future outbreaks.
City officials also plan to use the data to help make decisions on how to slowly lift social distancing restrictions.
On Monday, Jersey City, located across the Hudson River from Manhattan, New York, was testing all front line workers for antibodies. Testing for residents who want to be tested begins later in the week.
New Jersey is among the hardest-hit states in the country with 7,871 COVID-19 fatalities and more than 120,000 positive cases.
Jersey City officials say they have an initial goal of 2,100 tests per week for residents.
