When the thyroid gland no longer makes enough thyroid hormone, it’s called hypothyroidism. This condition is treated by taking a pill form of the thyroid hormone. There are two types of thyroid hormones in the body: T3 and T4. Patients can take synthetic T3 or T4, but the most common is T4.
Another way to get more of the thyroid hormone that your body needs is through dried animal thyroid glands, usually from pigs or cows. This is called desiccated thyroid or thyroid extract. For this option, the amount of T3 and T4 hormones in each pill can vary, so it’s important to discuss this method with your provider.
