Consistent productivity can be elusive for some, but for author David Baldacci, that’s not a problem. With more than 110 million books in print, he is a productivity machine, churning out bestsellers almost as fast as his fans can read them.
In this interview with Skip Prichard, David talks about how he maintains such productivity, gives advice to aspiring authors and talks about the years it took to reach his current success. He also highlights his passion for libraries and literacy programs, including the nonprofit organization, Wish You Well, he founded with his wife.
David says that his productivity is tied to a commitment to write nearly every day. He doesn’t set a word count goal for each day, he just writes. Nor does he formally outline a book because it constrains how its plot and characters develop, and it takes the fun out of approaching what needs to be written each day.
To would-be authors, David says, “Don’t just write what you know, write about what you want to learn.” He says that doing research for a novel will suggest plot points. “When I start a novel, I never know how it is going to end.”
