Dr. Heather Scott, high risk Obstetrician and head of Obstetrics at the IWK Health Centre answers questions around vaccine safety for pregnant individuals and those planning to become pregnant. Research has shown that the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines approved in Canada are safe to get at any time during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Furthermore, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that the COVID-19 vaccines impact fertility and should not be avoided by individuals planning to become pregnant.
It is important to remember that there are benefits and potential risks associated with any vaccine and that the benefits far outweigh the risks of moderate to severe symptoms if pregnant individuals become infected with COVID-19.
