STORYLINE
South African religious leaders gathered outside the hospital in Pretoria where Nelson Mandela remains on Wednesday to pray for the former president.
Anglican Bishop Jo Seoka, president of the South African Council of Churches, prayed for Mandela's health and asked the nation to seek inspiration from their faith in God.
"We believe that Madiba (Mandela's clan name) is God's gift to us yet again," he said.
"God, who never fails to inspire hope, has given us Madiba as a message for this moment, and through him God is rekindling our spirit of national unity in the consciousness of what Madiba represents, to inspire our hope."
Mandela, 95, has been hospitalised since June 8. The government says his health has improved but he remains in critical condition.
Mandela spent 27 years in prison during white rule and was released in 1990. He led the shift from apartheid to democracy and became president in all-race elections in 1994.
