What nail gun should you buy for your first one? This is a question many beginner woodworkers, DIYers, hobbyists, and weekend warriors ask themselves. The answer depends on what kind of projects you will be building but the most common size nail guns for starting out are 18 Ga nail gun (also known as a brad nailer) and the 15 Ga nail gun (known as a finish nailer). Even though the 18 gauge gun does not have "finish" in the name it can still be used for smaller size trim work such as small to medium baseboards and crown molding. For larger trim work and casing a 15 gauge nailer may be your best option because of the larger nail creates more holding power. Also, with it having a longer nail a 15 ga finish nailer is the best choice for installing prehung doors.
