Traffic Collision w/ Fatalities LACoFD 73's Santa Clarita
A fiery crash on northbound Interstate 5 killed four people Thursday night just before 7:30 p.m., when a black van, traveling at a high rate of speed, crashed into a Freightliner truck, officials at the California Highway Patrol said.
The Freightliner, which was attached to a trailer, was parked on the side of the freeway, just north of Weldon Canyon Road.
The van crashed into the trailer, which then caused the trailer and van to catch on fire.
The male driver of the van and his three passengers all died at the scene. Identification and next of kin notifications are pending. The driver of the truck was not hurt. Officials say drugs and/or alcohol may have contributed to the crash, but the investigation is on-going.
The crash forced the closure of three northbound lanes of the I-5 for hours. All lanes were reopened Friday before the morning commute.
The collision is being investigated by the CHP Newhall office. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call (661) 294-5540.
