Fall Bulbs are here at Green Thumb Nursery and so Kathy wanted to put together an in-depth 3-part video on how to plant and care for fall bulbs! She covers Tulips, Dutch Iris, Freesia, Ranunculus in the first part of the how-to video, then follows up with a demonstration on how to plant paper whites Narcissus in a container with rocks using an alcoholic solution for watering. In the third part of the video Kathy covers how to use the amaryllis kits to easily pot up your bulbs to enjoy yourself or to give as gifts!
Kathy covers important topics as far as how to fertilize your bulbs, how to keep pests away from your plants and what other bulb food products work perfectly for the occasion.
Easy to follow instruction for using alcohol to keep paperwhite plants short and compact!
Ethanol alcohol, the alcohol found in most "hard liquors" (i.e. vodka, gin, rum tequila) is an excellent growth regulator to keep paperwhite plants short and compact during indoor forcing.
A 4-5% solution of ethanol will do the trick, here's how:
plant paperwhite bulbs in stones, rock grave, marble or glass beads as seen in the video. Then water in as you normally would for 7-10 days. When you observe roots and 2-3" of green shoots, replace the water with the alcohol solution!
How to make the solution: most distilled spirits are 40% ethanol alcohol (80-proof)
1 part alcohol to 9 parts water = 4% solution
1 part alcohol to 7 parts water = 5% solution
Use this solution for further 'watering' of the paperwhites
The result is plants that are about 1/3 more compact, with flowers just as large, long lasting and fragrant as usual!
