China's first mid-low speed maglev line in Changsha, capital of Hunan Province in the south part of the country, passed preliminary assessment Friday morning.
A team consisting of more than 20 experts and media representatives inspected the project launched in May 2014, and took a test ride on the maglev train.
"The train is in good condition. It runs more smoothly, provides better comfort (for passengers) and produces less noise than the prototype vehicle. That is to say the prototype train has been turned into a product from a scientific project through engineering and industrialization. I call it a product because it has totally met the requirements of the market," said Liu Youmei, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), China's top engineering academic institution.
Experts held that the project is now ready for test run, and that it supplies on more option for urban mass transit
"When the maglev train was under construction, there were doubts if it was necessary, and if it could be replaced by light rail instead. We said that if there was an ascent of over 30 degrees, light rail could not be constructed, and maglev was the only option. In addition, the maglev train can have a turning radius of 50 meters, an impossible figure for light rail. So only the maglev train can solve these problems in different cities with different transportation modes including underground transportation," said Qian Qingquan, another academician from CAE.
The test run is scheduled for Saturday, and the maglev train may be open to the public three months later, according to the city's transport authority.
"In the next step, we will run systematic tests on the reliability and usability of the train. We will also reinforce the training of our operational staff and their capability in emergency response. We can only put the maglev train on trial operation after test run of three months or more," said Peng Xufeng, board chairman of the Changsha Metro Group Co., Ltd.
The 18.54-kilometer maglev line connects Changshanan Railway Station, the city's railway station for high-speed trains, and the Changsha Huanghua International Airport.
