The 2014 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine has been awarded to three scientists. They’re being awarded for their discoveries of brain cells that act as a kind of “inner GPS” system. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute says half of the prize goes to US-British scientist John O’Keefe. The other half goes to Norwegian husband and wife Edvard Moser and May-Britt Moser. It says the laureates’ discoveries have helped explain how the brain creates a map of the space surrounding us, and how we can navigate our way through a complex environment.
