Bonobos, initially known as pygmy chimpanzees, resemble chimpanzees but have distinct features like a flatter head, longer legs, and a slender body. They sport dark brown or black fur, with whiskers hiding their ears, pink or red lips, and 32 teeth. Older bonobos may have silvery gray fur.
Remarkably, bonobos share 98.7% of their genome with humans, making them one of our closest relatives. Discovered in 1929, they were identified as a separate species in the 1950s. Known for their impressive vertical jump of up to 27.5 inches, surpassing the average human's 16-to-24-inch jump. Bonobos use the same sounds with different meanings depending on context or situation.
