Hi, this is Michelle. We continue to study the Sonatina op. 36, no. 2, the 2nd movement by Muzio Clementi. This movement is written in C major, a subdominant key of the G major. The first and the last movements are in the G major.
The 2nd movement is in 3-part ABA, ternary form. The tempo is allegretto, which means moderately fast. The time is in 3/4 which means a quarter note receives 1 count and 3 counts per measure. Section A is from bar 1 to 8, and B from 9 to 16. Section A then comes back in bar 17 to the end. There is a “dolce” in bar 1, meaning to play it sweetly.
The texture of this movement is homophonic, which means melody with accompaniment. Therefore, the right hand’s melody must be played louder than the left hand’s accompaniment. The long-short rhythm 3/4+1/4 is dotted eight followed by a 16th note, must be played precisely. “Fz” in bar 5, 6, 21, 22, 25 and 26, is the abbreviation of “forzando”, an Italian word for “forcing.” Clementi used this sign frequently. Keep a good balance when playing it. Pedal is one beat each. This is a delightful piece of music.
