While browsing YouTube for covers of "For No One," I came to the startling conclusion that almost nobody plays the keyboard parts correctly! There are several "tutorials" out there, but they (again, NOT all of them) seem to do one of the following:
A- They play chords the left hand and the vocal melody in the right hand.
B- They absolutely butcher the right hand during "and in her eyes, you see nothing.
C- They play it in the key of C. This song is in B, but C is easier, so many bump it up a bit. True, Paul recorded it in C and then slowed it down, bringing the pitch down to B, but hey, why wouldn't you want to play it so it sounds like the album?
I wouldn't really consider this video a tutorial. Basically, I show the left hand piano part by itself, then the right hand piano part by itself, and then both together with full instrumentation. Hopefully those who want to learn it somewhat close to the recorded version happen to stumble upon this video.
A few tips:
- Don't play octaves with your left hand. When McCartney is on the keys, he plays left hand octaves 99% of the time. This is the 1% where he doesn't.
- During "and in her eyes..." don't be afraid to alternate the two notes with the left hand. Don't feel like you have to "pump" with the right.
- Use a metronome or click at your own risk. The verses hang around 80-81bpm, but the last couple chords after "a love that should've lasted years" drop down to about 74bpm.
Lastly, excuse the shaky left hand. I was trying to work around the bulky tripod I had set up EXACTLY where my left arm should've been. Talk about a wrist strain!
