During the 1960s and 1970s the famous film actor Marlon Brando spoke out forcefully about the abuse of minorities and the false understandings Americans have of their history because of what they see in movies and television. The most famous occasion of his protest was his choice to refuse the 1973 Academy Award for best actor for his role in The Godfather. He did not attend the ceremony and instead sent a representative of National Native American Affirmative Image Committee to make a speech and explain the reasons for his refusal to accept the award. This decision was instantly a huge controversy within American society, even though the representative had been allowed to make only a very short and moderate version of the speech.
A few weeks later, Marlon Brando was interviewed by Dick Cavett. During this interview he was able to express many of the views he wanted to convey at the Academy Awards event. This video consists of two excerpts from the interview in which this topic is covered.
