Mercury is shrinking due to the cooling and contracting of its interior, causing its outermost layer to crack and form cliffs. As the planet's core contracts, its magnetic field strengthens. The shrinkage is estimated to be around 7 kilometers in diameter over the last four billion years, as observed by NASA's Messenger spacecraft.
