Burkina Faso Frees French Spies | Firstpost Africa

Junta-led Burkina Faso has released four French nationals who were held for over a year on charges of espionage following mediation from Morocco between the West African country and its former coloniser. The four French nationals were arrested in December 2023 and were presented as agents of France’s foreign intelligence agency. The release comes amid a low point in Paris’ relations with former colonies in West Africa. Burkina Faso’s ties with France have deteriorated ever since the military junta came to power in 2022. The country, like its neighbours Niger and Mali, has grown closer to Russia.
