BRAZIL FORMULA 1 TYRE TESTING
Formula 1 car racing. Teams preparing for official tyre tests in readiness for April 14th Brazilian Grand Prix.
Most of the top Formula One car racing teams on Saturday (21/2) were at the Jacarepgua circuit, near Rio De Janeiro, to prepare their cars for official tyre tests in readiness for the April 14 Brazilian Grand Prix - the first of the 1987 season. The new Camel Lotus car with its Honda engine was the star attraction, but it was not put through its paces out on the circuit. Ayrton Senna, the team's leading driver, was standing by while Japanese mechanics struggled to adjust their engine in the Lotus frame, but his services were not to be needed. The Williams Honda team however was not shy about testing its cars around Jacarepgua. Team drivers Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet fared extremely well in last year's championship, taking second and third places, and it was only a tyre blow-out during the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide - the last event of the 1986 season - that robbed Mansell of the title. The MacLaren team also failed to make it out onto the track. Instead, it was content to concentrate on mechanical aspects rather than some real performance testing. Alain Prost, last year's championship winner, will be driving for the team again this year, joined by Stefan Johannson - replacement driver for Keke Rosberg.
