Martin Bormann is a largely forgotten member of Hitler's inner circle despite being effectively the de facto head of the Nazi government during the later years of the war. But what caused his Downfall & his tragic end.
Who was Martin Bormann?
Martin Ludwig Bormann was a German Nazi Party official and head of the Nazi Party Chancellery, private secretary to Adolf Hitler and a war criminal. After the war, he was convicted and sentenced to death-in-absentia for crimes against humanity.
He disappeared after Hitler's death and was presumed dead or in hiding. He was last seen on May 2, 1945, riding in a tank over the Weidendammer bridge in Berlin. It's believed that he committed suicide on a bridge near Lehrter station to avoid capture by the Soviets.
What role did Martin Bormann take in the creation of the Berghof?
Bormann gained immense power by using his position as Hitler's private secretary to control the flow of information and access to Hitler. He used his position to create an extensive bureaucracy and involve himself as much as possible in the decision making. In 1935, Bormann was appointed as overseer of renovations at the Berghof, Hitler's property at Obersalzberg. In the early 1930s, Hitler bought the property, which he had been renting since 1925 as a vacation retreat.
