For the first time at Northwestern Medicine, surgeons have performed a kidney transplant for a patient who was awake during the entire surgery and who was discharged home the next day. The patient, John Nicholas of Chicago, Illinois, felt no pain during surgery and was home less than 24 hours later. Instead of using general anesthesia, John’s Northwestern Medicine care team used a spinal anesthesia shot. This approach may improve transplantation access for people with high-risk complications from general anesthesia, while also shortening hospital stays for transplant recipients.
