(1 Nov 2020) Clashes erupted in Barcelona between police and protesters angry at a recent series of evictions that took place in the city.
Hundreds of demonstrators marched from the Barcelona Cathedral to the city hall on Saturday.
Protesters held a banner that read: "These are not evictions, it is a war against the poor."
In front of city hall, a small group of protesters threw stones, breaking windows and causing the police to storm in and disperse the crowd.
The demonstration followed a series of evictions in Barcelona including that of the historic Casa Buenos Aires, a former hotel in the Vallvidrera neighbourhood that was occupied by squatters in 2019.
Evictions were suspended during the first lockdown in the spring, but resumed after restrictions were lifted in the summer.
But as coronavirus cases surge again and the country brings back restrictions on mobility, the recent evictions were heavily criticised.
Clashes erupted on Friday in central Barcelona between riot police and dozens of people in a hundreds-strong crowd protesting against pandemic-related restrictions as authorities struggle to rein in a sharp coronavirus resurgence.
Friday evening's riots were the most violent that Spain has seen so far against pandemic-related restrictions.
