The King's coronation contained several Byzantine elements, in keeping with His Majesty's lifelong interest in the Eastern Christian tradition.
Not only was the holy anointing oil provided by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, but the screens used during the anointing itself were designed by renowned Orthodox iconographer, Aidan Hart. Adding further solemnity was the singing of Psalm 71(72) in Byzantine chant by the incomparable Capella Romana, directed by Alexander Lingas.
While many faith traditions were represented in the ceremony, the Byzantine Christian tradition featured prominently in an event watched by millions around the world. ✠
